Wines for your Christmas Menu
The biggest event of the year deserves specially and expertly considered wines. From turkey, to goose, the perfect roast beef and even a nut roast, keep everyone happy this Christmas with Amelia’s top tips on how to choose the perfect selection of wines for every taste. Wine Expert of ITV’s The Wine Show, Amelia Singer shares her top tips ahead of this festive season!
For turkey, you need quite a rich and perhaps oaked white wine, or try a fun blend such as from the Rhone. Otherwise try a young, medium bodied red with lots of juicy red fruits – New World Pinot Noirs are great or for a more traditional choice, try Barbera or Primitivo from Italy.
For goose, you need a high acidity white wine, to stand up to the fat! Otherwise try a high acidity, high tannin and fairly robust red wine like a traditional Barolo or you could go completely off-piste and get something from Madiran, Cahors in the South of France.
For beef, you need a white wine with good minerality and acidity to cut through the fat which coats your mouth, try a Sauvignon Blanc from Friuli in Italy or even a dry rosé. Of course, so many red wines will match perfectly with beef from Malbec, Burgundy, to Shiraz, Rioja and Cabernet blends from Australia or South Africa. An added bonus – so many of these great reds have high fruit content and warm spicy notes, brilliantly matched with mince pies too – that’s wine savvy!
